Father wounds and childhood emotional neglect can shape porn addiction in ways many men do not recognize. You may believe you simply have a problem with lust or self-control, while pornography has quietly become a way to manage loneliness, powerlessness, shame, stress, or a deeper hunger to feel like you have what it takes.

In this episode, I sit down with Chris Bruno, founder of Restoration Project and Restory Counseling, to explore the unhealed boy behind pornography addiction. Chris helps men recover their hearts through the interconnected work of fatherhood, brotherhood, sonship, and storywork.

We discuss how every father wound begins with an unmet father hunger: a boy’s need for his father’s attentive face, life-giving words, guidance, and blessing. Sometimes that wound comes through obvious abuse, abandonment, or harshness. Other times it develops through the quieter drought of childhood emotional neglect—a home where a boy was provided for but never deeply known, guided through his emotions, or welcomed into manhood.

Chris explains why porn addiction can become a coping mechanism and survival strategy. Pornography may offer a counterfeit sense of power, control, accomplishment, connection, or masculine initiation. Understanding this deeper story does not excuse our adult choices. It gives us the clarity and compassion necessary to take meaningful responsibility for them.

We also explore practical storywork for addiction recovery, the difference between sexual desire and emotional activation, how to move from resentment into grief, and why healing brotherhood must offer more than a weekly accountability report.

Brother, the boy who first reached for pornography may have been trying to survive emotions and experiences he did not know how to carry. He does not need more humiliation. He needs honesty, compassion, protection, and mature leadership.

But the adult man must eventually take the lead.

Recovery is not merely about removing pornography. It is about healing the emotional roots of porn addiction, recovering healthy masculinity, building meaningful relationships, and creating a life that offers something better than escape.
